US Africa Command Confirms Fresh Airstrikes Against ISIS in Nigeria

US Africa Command

In a significant escalation of counterterrorism efforts, the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed it carried out additional airstrikes against Islamic State militants in northeastern Nigeria.

The strikes, which occurred on May 17, were conducted in close coordination with the Nigerian government. This operation marks the second major joint action between the US and Nigeria within a week, following the high-profile elimination of a senior ISIS leader.

Details of the Operation

According to official statements released on Monday, the precision strikes targeted terrorist hideouts in the Metele area of Borno State, a known flashpoint for insurgent activity in the Lake Chad basin region .

AFRICOM stated that the operation involved "kinetic strikes" and that intelligence confirmed the targets were ISIS militants. Crucially, the command reported that no US or Nigerian personnel were harmed during the mission .

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) provided further details on the outcome of the bombardment. In a statement issued by Director of Defence Information Major General Samaila Uba, the military confirmed that more than 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters were eliminated during the air raids .

Context: The Hunt for ISIS Commanders

This week’s airstrikes are a direct follow-up to a "very complex mission" conducted just days earlier. On May 15, US President Donald Trump announced that American and Nigerian forces had successfully killed Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, identified as the second-in-command of ISIS globally .

At the time, President Trump praised the Nigerian military for their flawless execution of the operation. President Bola Tinubu also confirmed the joint mission, stating that Nigerian troops collaborated closely with US counterparts to neutralize the high-value target in Metele .

A Shared Security Commitment

The back-to-back operations signify a deepened military partnership between Washington and Abuja. The removal of these terrorists, as noted by AFRICOM, "diminishes the group’s capacity to plan attacks that threaten the safety and security of the US and our partners" .

The Defence Headquarters echoed this sentiment, vowing that there will be "no safe haven for terrorists anywhere in Nigeria" . The ongoing operations are part of a sustained effort to dismantle terrorist networks and deny them the ability to regroup in the North-East.

US-Nigeria Coordinated Strike Against ISIS Fighters

The consecutive strikes represent one of the most aggressive phases of US-Nigeria counterterrorism cooperation in years. By targeting not just field fighters but the command structure of ISIS in West Africa, the allied forces aim to cripple the group's operational planning capabilities.

As AFRICOM remains "committed to leveraging specialised US capabilities," security analysts suggest that the pressure on insurgent enclaves in the Lake Chad Basin will continue to intensify in the coming weeks .
