In a landmark decision aimed at tackling tnation’s worsening plastic pollution crisis, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has officially announced a nationwide ban on the production, importation, sale, and use of Styrofoam products, popularly known as "takeaway packs
The ban is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, giving manufacturers, food vendors, and the general public an 18-month transition period to adapt to environmentally sustainable alternatives .
Why is Ghana Banning Styrofoam?
The move follows a policy directive issued by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2025 World Environment Day celebrations. The government has identified Styrofoam (expanded polystyrene or EPS) as a major contributor to environmental degradation .
Unlike biodegradable waste, Styrofoam can take hundreds of years to decompose. In Ghanaian cities like Accra and Kumasi, discarded takeaway packs frequently clog drainage systems, contributing to flooding during the rainy season. Furthermore, the material breaks down into microplastics that pollute water bodies and harm marine life .

According to the EPA, the ban is part of broader national efforts to "protect public health, improve environmental sanitation, reduce plastic waste, and advance sustainable development" .
Which Products Are Affected?
The ban covers all forms of expanded polystyrene (EPS) used for commercial and domestic purposes. If finalized in its current form, the following items will disappear from the Ghanaian market by 2027:
· Food packaging containers and takeaway packs (the common "rice packs").
· Disposable cups and plates.
· Foam packs used by restaurants, chop bars, and food vendors.
· Foam mattresses and bedding materials.
· Ceiling and insulation materials made from polystyrene foam .
Exemptions
There will be a narrow exemption for EPS products intended strictly for medical, scientific, laboratory, and diagnostic purposes, subject to strict regulatory approval .
The Transition Period (2025 – 2027)
The EPA has confirmed that it will not leave businesses to struggle alone. Between now and the enforcement date, the Authority will undertake a three-phase preparation plan:
1. Stakeholder Engagement: Consultations with manufacturers, importers, and distributors to ensure a smooth transition.

2. Public Education: Nationwide campaigns to educate the public on the dangers of Styrofoam and the benefits of alternatives.
3. Enforcement Preparation: Strengthening compliance monitoring at ports (with Customs officials), markets, and retail outlets .
The EPA is urging all manufacturers to begin transitioning to safer, reusable, recyclable, and environmentally friendly alternatives immediately .
What Are the Alternatives?
For the ban to succeed, affordable alternatives must be available. While the EPA has not mandated a specific replacement, the market is expected to shift toward:
· Paper-based packaging.
· Biodegradable plastics.
· Reusable containers.
These alternatives align with Ghana’s broader agenda of promoting a circular economy and adhering to the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework currently being finalized by the government .

The Bigger Picture: Ghana’s Fight Against Plastic Pollution
This Styrofoam ban is not an isolated incident. It represents a significant escalation in Ghana's war on waste. Recent initiatives, such as stakeholder workshops led by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) on recycling standards (rPET), demonstrate a governmental push toward sustainable waste management and recycling infrastructure .
By banning Styrofoam, Ghana joins a growing list of African nations, including Rwanda and Kenya, that have taken aggressive stances against single-use plastics to protect the environment.
How to Prepare for the Ban
· For Businesses (Food Vendors & Restaurants): Start sourcing alternative packaging now. Testing different materials early will help you find cost-effective solutions and avoid the last-minute rush as the 2027 deadline approaches.
· For Manufacturers: The EPA requires you to commence the transition to reusable or recyclable materials. Consider investing in alternative production lines .
· For Consumers: Support the initiative by adopting sustainable consumption habits. Carry reusable bags or containers where possible.

Conclusion
The countdown to a Styrofoam-free Ghana has begun. While the ban starting in 2027 provides a buffer for the economy to adjust, the message from the EPA is clear: the era of takeaway packs is ending.
This is a decisive step toward a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for the nation.
