The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for 2026 has arrived, and it looks very different from previous years. With over 620,141 candidates registered, this year’s exam introduces groundbreaking policies that affect every JHS 3 student in Ghana.
If you are a candidate, parent, or teacher, here is what makes the BECE 2026 unique.
1. No More Early Candidates
In previous years, it was common to see Primary 6 or JHS 1 students sitting for the BECE early. That era is over.

For 2026, only current JHS 3 students are permitted to write the exam. The government banned early candidates due to poor preparedness. If you are not in JHS 3, you must wait your turn.
2. Choose Your School After Results
This is a game-changer. Traditionally, students selected their Senior High School (SHS) months before writing the exam, often guessing their performance.
In 2026, students will select their preferred SHS after receiving their results. WAEC has opened a one-week window for post-results school selection. This allows you to choose a school based on your actual scores, not predicted grades.
3. Say Goodbye to “Show and Pour”
WAEC has declared a zero-tolerance policy on cheating. The infamous era of “show and pour” (externally supplied answers) is officially over.

Officials state that BECE 2026 results must reflect individual competence. Stronger security measures are in place to ensure fairness.
4. Critical Thinking Over Rote Memorization
The common core curriculum continues to evolve. While introduced in 2024, the 2026 cohort is the best prepared yet.
The exam no longer rewards simple memorization. Instead, BECE 2026 focuses on:
· Critical thinking
· Creativity
· Problem-solving
Students have two previous years of past papers to study, giving them an advantage over the 2024 pioneers.
5. More Candidates, Tougher Competition
Registration numbers are up. The BECE 2026 has a 2.7% increase in candidates compared to 2025. More candidates mean greater competition for placement into top SHS.

6. The Subject Load Debate Remains
Stakeholders have described the schedule as “tough” – 11 subjects over 5 days. While advocacy groups had proposed reducing this to just 4 core papers to lower stress, WAEC has not reduced the number of subjects for 2026. Candidates must prepare for the full load.
Final Tips for BECE 2026 Candidates
· Focus on understanding concepts, not just memorizing answers.
· Don’t rely on cheating – WAEC is actively enforcing new rules.
· Wait until results are released before finalizing your SHS choices.
· Prepare for all 11 subjects – no reductions have been made.
