After months of legal battles and failed attempts, embattled Ghanaian social media influencer Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has finally been granted bail by an Accra High Court .
The decision, announced by his lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor on April 21, 2026, marks a significant turning point in the high-stakes extradition case that has captivated the public. Abu Trica is accused by US authorities of being a key player in an international cybercrime network responsible for defrauding elderly American victims out of over $8 million through romance scams .

The Bail Conditions
The court set stringent bail conditions, reportedly setting the amount at GH₵30 million (approximately $2 million USD). The ruling requires Abu Trica to provide two sureties, both of whom must be justified .
His lawyer confirmed the news with a simple social media post: "The High Court has just granted bail to Abu Trica. Shalom" . This ruling comes after previous bail applications were repeatedly rejected by lower courts.
Why Was Abu Trica Arrested?
Authorities allege that Abu Trica was part of a sophisticated syndicate that used digital tools, including Artificial Intelligence, to create fake identities and manipulate victims .

He was initially arrested on December 11, 2025, in a joint operation between Ghanaian authorities and US law enforcement. If extradited and convicted in the United States, he faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, which carry potential sentences of up to 20 years in prison .
The Legal Battle Ahead
While the bail grants him temporary freedom, the legal war is far from over. The defense team is challenging the extradition on a technicality: they argue that wire fraud and money laundering are not explicitly listed as extraditable offenses under the 1931 extradition treaty between Ghana and the US .
"The prosecution’s conspiracy claim is weakened," his lawyers argue, especially after two other individuals initially linked to the case—Lord Eshun and Bernard Aidoo—were discharged due to insufficient evidence .

It is important to note that "Abu Trica" is distinct from Egyptian football legend Mohamed Aboutrika. Recent searches for the name may also pull up news regarding Aboutrika’s controversial statements regarding the Premier League and Mohamed Salah, but the dominant breaking news story revolves around this Ghanaian extradition case .
What Happens Next?
Abu Trica is now out on bail, but the extradition proceedings will continue. The High Court will eventually have to rule on whether he must be sent to the US to stand trial. For now, his legal team views the bail approval as a major procedural victory.
